Suspended: M'sian cops who 'forced' singer Zamani to sing in lock-up
Two police officers who "forced" a popular band vocalist to sing while under arrest have been suspended.
A video showing singer Zamani Ibrahim - frontman of 90s Malaysian band Slam - singing the hit song Gerimis Mengundang while in handcuffs had gone viral on social media earlier this week.
About a minute into the video, the 43-year-old stops singing and asks sheepishly if he's sung enough.
A voice behind the camera can be heard asking the singer to continue.
Many were outraged at how the singer was treated.
Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) director Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Zubaidah Md Ismail said today that the department has launched an investigation.
She said:
"The Inspector-General of Police has given the department the green light to remove the officers who were involved in the matter from active duty, pending an investigation.
"We are not just questioning them but their supervisors as well, as to how a lapse in police procedure could occur."
While she declined to reveal the two officers' ranks, she said that stern action would be taken against them if they have been found to have flouted any rules and added that she was "ashamed" of their actions.
Zamani was arrested on Wednesday (Jan 21) for alleged involvement in drug abuse at his house.
He was arrested with a 32-year-old woman for allegedly possessing heroin.
