What's Mr Lee Kuan Yew like? Here are what MPs say in tweets & videos
Ministers and MPs attended a special Parliamentary session on Thursday (March 26) to pay tributes to Mr Lee Kuan Yew.
A dozen members spoke, including the Speaker, Madam Halimah Yacob.
Here's what some of them said:
1) Mr Lee the devoted husband
Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen recalled how, during a trip to Malaysia in 2009, Mr Lee would call Mrs Lee every night, even though she was not able to respond to him as she had a stroke.
2) The caring man
Former Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng thought he had a health scare after a doctor diagnosed him with transient ischemic attack, which later turned out to be false:
3) The extraordinary political leader
Workers' Party chief Low Thia Khiang said Singapore's racial and religious harmony is a great achievement of Mr Lee's.
But he said some of Mr Lee's decisions were controversial.
Mr Low ends by saying: "I have great respect for Mr Lee."
4) 'Some say he was arrogant'
Nominated MP Chia Yong Yong had never met Mr Lee before.
Despite realising she would never know this man, her impression was strong:
"He said he was not concerned or obsessed with opinion polls or popularity.
"Some say he was arrogant. But he said he thought a leader who is thus concerned or obsessed is a weak leader."
5) He cared deeply for Singaporeans & Singapore
That's the reason for his bond with the people, said Ms Indranee Rajah.
"This is who we are today because of this man, his vision and his leadership, and above all, his unconquerable spirit from which we took heart and which now defines us as a people and a nation - the spirit of Singapore."
