MRT staff & commuters to the rescue: They freed student whose leg was stuck in platform gap
Talk about people power.
Good Samaritans came to the aid of a junior college student who found herself in a tight spot this morning.
The student's leg somehow became trapped in the gap between the train and the platform at Hougang MRT station this morning (March 11).
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the incident at about 7.50am and arrived with one fire engine and an ambulance.
But staff and fellow commuters at the North East Line station helped to pull the student's leg out of the 10cm gap before SCDF's arrival, said Ms Tammy Tan, senior vice-president of corporate communications at SBS Transit.
Mind the 10cm-gap
The student was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. She is believed to have suffered bruises.
This incident led to the train being held back at the station, causing service to be delayed on the Line, said Ms Tan.
Photos uploaded on social media showed the heavy congestion at Hougang MRT station.
SMRT said that the gap between the platform and the train is "designed to provide a small physical clearance to accommodate the movement of the train body when it approaches the station."
"Without it, the train body may come into contact with the station's platform edge and this would be dangerous," said Ms Tan.
