Daphne strikes gold for bowling
Singaporean kegler Daphne Tan was unstoppable as she won the women's singles bowling gold at Orchid Country Club on Tuesday with a six-game total of 1,368 pinfalls.
In only her first game, she put together 10 strikes in a row after an opening spare, and finished with a nine for a score of 289, the highest game of the day.
Her average of 228 over six games was almost 10 points more than compatriot and runner-up Jazreel Tan.
Tan, the most bemedalled Singaporean athlete at the 2014 Asian Games, gave it as good as she got though.
She led by seven pinfalls going into the last game, but was eventually undone by two open frames.
Cherie Tan finished third with 1,294 pinfalls, but because the SEA Games diplomatic rules state that each country cannot win three medals in any single event, she had to give up the bronze medal to Malaysia's Esther Cheah, who was fourth.
Earlier, 18-year-old Malaysian Rafiq Ismail won the men's singles gold on his debut.
His six-game score of 1,308 beat Thailand's Annop Arromsaranon's by a mere three pinfalls.
Singaporean Javier Tan took bronze with a score of 1,284.
