All-rounder Jason has an eye for archery
Archer Jason Quah is an all-rounder and a delight to teach
He is a recipient of this year's Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship, a member of the national youth archery team, and he holds a black belt in taekwondo.
Look up the definition of an all-rounder and chances are that 15-year-old Jason Quah fits the description to a T.
The Junyuan Secondary School student, who is in the school's top class, is an executive committee member of the student council and captain of the school's archery team as well.
Apart from leading his squad to a silver medal in the team event at the National Inter-school B Division Archery Championships in April, Jason also won an individual bronze at the tournament.
No wonder he ranks it as one of his proudest achievements.
He said: "It's the first time I've won a bronze; I had always placed fourth or fifth in previous competitions.
"This year's contestants were also more competitive, as they were more experienced than me.
"Being able to shoot a better score than them is really something I'm proud of."
And here's the kicker: The teenager picked up archery just two years ago.
He chose the sport because he is determined to master the art of shooting consistently.
He said: "I found archery quite challenging, and I like taking up challenges.
FUN
"It's also very fun shooting outdoors, so I decided to make archery my co-curricular activity (CCA)."
Another position the Secondary Three student has undertaken is his role as head of department for special projects in the student council.
"It's daunting because we have to plan important school events," said Jason, who was inducted into the executive committee earlier this year.
"There will be teachers around to guide us, but we mostly plan on our own and there's always the possibility that things don't work out."
He named time management and discipline as the keys to juggling his many commitments.
Jason's Secondary One form teacher Gan Juok Sia said the teenager used to be rather "chatty and playful", and sometimes had to be told off.
She added: "He was playful at times, but he always handled the feedback positively.
"He is very likeable, and he is a good influence on his peers."
Junyuan's archery teacher-in-charge, Kenn Thng, hopes that the rest of the team can follow in Jason's footsteps.
He said: "Jason knows how to talk to his teammates and communicate with them properly, and he's always the one whom everyone can count on.
"He is a good role model."
