Singapore claim one gold as weather conditions cause havoc to sailing at Marina Bay

Singapore clinched their only gold medal in Sunday's four sailing events at Marina Bay, and they did it without even lining up at the start line.

A lack of sailing wind delayed races by about two and a half hours and as a result, the female keelboat race could not start on time.

The gold was automatically awarded to Singapore, who had won all their round-robin races.

"We had been waiting so long and really wanted to sail today. It's kind of an anti-climactic win," Jovina Choo, one of Singapore's three sailors, told The New Paper..

The time-out also meant that the female team laser radial event could not be completed. Singapore and Malaysia were level after two races, forcing both teams into a four-way tiebreaker.

After a long deliberation by officials, Malaysia claimed the gold medal as they had won the last round-robin series.

Bad luck also befell Singapore's male team laser standard and male keelboat sailors as they struggled with the unpredictable wind conditions.

They got stuck in still air for lengthy periods, while their opponents managed to catch good gusts and overtook them from behind.

The laser standard gold went to Malaysia, while the Philippines claimed the keelboat race title.
