WATCH: Elephant stuck in mud for 12 hours gets extraordinary rescue
This Kenyan elephant was believed to be searching for water when it fell into a mud pit.
What followed was 12 hour-struggle as it got stuck in the sludge.
The Independent reported that farmers could only look on helplessly as they watched the distressed animal try to free itself.
A dramatic rescue followed when the farmers called for help and an excavator finally helped the elephant escape the ditch.
The touching scene was captured on camera by conservation scientist and wildlife photographer Jeremy Goss. He said:
"It was heart-breaking to see the elephant in the well, particularly because the community had not been very keen or able to help it out.
"Elephants raid their crops and are generally not welcome, but it was a shocking sight for them nonetheless."
