3 dead in Geylang shophouse fire
Three people have died in a fire that broke out early today at a shophouse at 35, Geylang Lorong 4.
A spokesman from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told The New Paper they got the call at 1.40am.
Two fire engines, two Red Rhinos, six ambulances and two support vehicles were deployed to tackle the blaze.
Arriving within five minutes of the call, black smoke was billowing from a shophouse unit.
Using two water jets, firefighters extinguished the fire within 30 minutes.
During a search of the unit, three people were found unconscious by firefighters.
They were immediately brought out of the unit. Paramedics performed CPR in an attempt to revive them but all three were pronounced dead at the scene.
Another nine were sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Singapore General Hospital. They included two firefighters, who sustained minor injuries.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
The New Paper understands the workers are from China, India, Bangladesh and Malaysia.
UPDATE:
A fourth person has died, after succumbing to his injuries in hospital.
