Flame Awards: Will Shigga Shay's 'rojak' touch sway your vote for top viral MV?
Local rapper Shigga Shay's 'rojak' music video not only featured English, but also Tamil and Malay, with a smattering of common Hokkien and Singlish phrases.
The clip, which is about being a Singaporean kid at heart, features cameos by familiar faces like Patricia Mok, The Sam Willows' Benjamin Kheng, Rosalyn Lee and Jade Seah,.
It received over 50,000 views on YouTube three days after it was uploaded in August.
To date, it has garnered over 163,000 views, trailing behind Taufik Batisah's #AwakKatMane and Munah and Hirzi's Minahconda.
Shigga Shay is not too hopeful about bagging the title, but is "honoured" to be nominated.
"The other two are so huge. Taufik is so big this year, even I love that song. To be nominated in the same category as them is a good feeling," said the 22-year-old, who directed and edited the music video.
He will directing an upcoming short film to be released in conjunction with his debut album next year.
Meanwhile, he takes on his first movie role in Royston Tan's latest film 3688. He is also set to release a new single with local singer-songwriter Inch Chua called Shigga Morning next month.
Will it be anything like Lion City Kia?
"It is super different, almost a different genre altogether.
"It's light-hearted and happy, the kind of song you would listen to in the morning and think it's going to be a great day."
MUNAH AND HIRZI - MINAHCONDA: Spoof experts a hit
When it comes to parodies, Munah and Hirzi are class acts, bringing in the eyeballs and laughs.
The wacky YouTube duo, whose real names are Hirzi Zulkiflie and Maimunah Bagharib, hit all the right spots with their latest MV Minahconda, an outrageous parody of US rapper Nicki Minaj's hit song Anaconda.
In the video, the duo describe Minahconda as a hungry "minah".
We had a good laugh - as did the 515,599 viewers who have watched it on YouTube since its release in October.
"This is hilarious, I can't believe we're up against legit music acts. We're very grateful," said Hirzi, 25, of the nomination.
For him, it is their "craziest" video to date. "We took a short break when I was in LA and we wanted something big and loud, quick and explosive," he said.
Not surprisingly, their page subscription numbers jumped from 1,000 a month to 10,000 in just two-and-a-half weeks because of the MV's success.
They have since given their own twist to Taylor Swift's Shake It Off and Bang Bang by Minaj, Ariana Grande and Jessie J.
Do they ever run out of ideas?
"It is so stressful to outdo ourselves - I know that sounds so vain! But at the end of the day, it's all about having fun," said Hirzi.
"(But) now that you have planted the idea (of the nomination) in my head, I want to win!"
TAUFIK BATISAH - #AWAKKATMANE: His MV has more than 2.7m views
Even if Taufik Batisah's #AwakKatMane fails to snag this award, it wins hands-down for the most-asked question this year.
The Malay phrase translates into "Where are you?", and has become a popular catchphrase among fans and netizens even before the single was released two months ago.
#AwakKatMane is off the local singer's latest album Fique, and the MV has since earned over 2.7 million views on YouTube. Will it be an easy win for Taufik, 33?
"I think the other two videos are awesome and they both deserve to win," the former Singapore Idol champion told The New Paper in an e-mail.
As for the nomination, he had only one question: Is the prize a car?
Umm, sorry Taufik. How about a medal instead?
Win or lose, he has Suria telemovie Demi Adriana - in which he plays an orphan - to look forward to when it airs on Jan 1.
He also performs the song Hanya Kamu on its soundtrack.
I think the other two videos are awesome and they both deserve to win.
