Woman calls TNP after aunt dies in nursing home
Madam Nalina Ramasamy was overseeing some renovation works at her home when she received a shocking call about the death of her aunt.
The 73-year-old woman, who was staying at the Ren Ci Nursing Home, had choked to death on an ondeh-ondeh on March 18.
The coroner's inquiry into Ms Letchimi Anisamy's death was held last Tuesday and Madam Nalina called The New Paper hotline to alert us about the case.
Madam Nalina, 41, has been a loyal reader of TNP since her early 20s.
The kindergarten assistant was upset and confused with the treatment her aunt had received at the nursing home.
Madam Nalina hoped that this story would serve as a reminder to every one with an elderly relative.
"I just don't want this kind of thing to happen to another patient," she added.
The report about the coroner's inquiry was published on Sept 7.
Another report, published on Sept 6, was also the result of a reader's tip-off.
The reader, who gave her name only as Ms Grace, heard a commotion in an alley behind her condominum in Jalan Besar.
It was the first time a fight had broken out near her home and she hoped the authorities would clamp down on such behaviour.
A police spokesman confirmed the incident and said they arrested five men, aged 21 to 28, for affray around 1am on Sunday.
Investigations are still ongoing.
Another loyal TNP reader, who has been reading the newspaper since its launch in 1988, witnessed a horrifying accident involving a mobile crane at the junction of Bukit Batok West Avenue 5 and Bukit Batok Road last Monday.
Mr Hasam Johar, 53, called TNP's hotline as he felt it was his duty to inform the public about such a dreadful accident.
Mr Hasam said that after reading the next day's news report on the accident, he gained some insights into what had happened.
"I did not witness the entire incident, but through TNP's report, I got to understand everything better."
Another accident - a fatal one in Malaysia - made the news as well.
A friend of one of the Singaporeans on board the bus that crashed tipped TNP off about how several injured passengers found their valuables missing.
TNP reader Aaron, 31, tipped us off about his friend's predicament. The story on the alleged thefts was published last Thursday as a follow-up to an earlier report on the accident.
