Jail, cane for man who killed elderly man with umbrella at Ang Mo Kio park
A man used an umbrella to attack an elderly man at Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West on June 4, 2011 because the victim was chanting prayers on a grass patch.
Sumanthiran Selvarajoo was only 18 years old when he punched and kicked Mr Loo Nam Sheng, 64, on his face several times that day.
He was jailed 16 years and ordered to receive 12 strokes of the cane on Tuesday (March 1) for the unprovoked attack which happened at around 6.40am.
Mr Loo was pronounced dead at the scene about 30 minutes later.
Sumanthiran, now 22, had been drinking before he assaulted Mr Loo as he was irritated by the sight of the elderly man praying in the garden.
He committed the assault while out on $30,000 bail for other assault and theft charges.
Sumanthiran pleaded guilty to four charges - one count each of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, causing hurt and causing hurt with a weapon.
Three other charges - one count of causing hurt with a weapon and two counts of theft were taken into consideration.
