A Singaporean man, believed to be holding a Malaysia Automated Clearance System (Macs) sticker, was fined for exiting Malaysia and heading to Singapore without scanning his passport at the Johor Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex.

Sessions Court judge Salawati Djambri fined See Ah Chai RM2,000 (S$660) or in default, three months imprisonment, after he pleaded guilty. See, 48, paid the fine.

See was detained at the motorcycle lane of the Johor CIQ on Nov 10 at 9.40am.

Malaysia's The Star newspaper had in the past highlighted the failure of the system because no biometric thumb-scanners were placed at the Macs auto-gates at both the border crossings.

Since Macs was introduced five years ago, some 553,530 Singaporeans and foreign nationals with long-term employment in Singapore have applied for the Macs stickers.

In an unrelated case, Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority officers stopped a school bus and a tour bus and seized $168,310 worth of contraband cigarettes in two separate raids several days ago.
