It's a family affair at the TNP Big Walk
The New Paper Courts Big Walk will mean bonding time for the Lee family, including four-year-old Eleanor
Even though four-year-old Eleanor Lee cannot fit into the smallest-sized T-shirt that was given free to all participants of The New Paper Courts Big Walk, that will not stop her from taking part in the event next month.
It will be her second Big Walk and she will be joined by her parents and two sisters.
Her eldest sister, Ella, 13, said: "Eleanor enjoys going out as a family... She is in nursery school (most of the day) so we don't really get to spend time with her outside (of the home) except on weekends."
The Singapore Chinese Girls' School (SCGS) student added: "The Singapore Zoo is a world-class attraction and every time we go to the zoo, we have a lot of fun. We go there (as a family) and on school trips."
INTERESTING THEMES
Her father, Mr Lee Jek Suen, 42, an assistant vice-president of strategic planning at Jurong Port, said: "The Big Walk is good for families because it is after the girls' exam periods.
"The themes and locations are always interesting and different every year. For example, last year, it was meaningful because it was (to commemorate) Singapore's jubilee year...
"This year, the theme is very interesting because it is about animals."
Eleanor's older sister, Emma, nine, a pupil at Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary School, said: "It is quite hard to find time to just walk and bond (with my family).
"My dad always tries to sign us up (for running or walking events like the Big Walk) so that we can have family bonding time."
Mr Lee said he started adopting a healthier and more active lifestyle last year. He has been participating in marathons and runs and encourages his family to join him.
He had initially signed up for The New Paper Courts Big Walk with only Ella and Eleanor as his wife, Madam Gan Siow Huang, had thought she would have to work on that day.
Madam Gan, 42, a commander at Air Power Generation Command at the Republic of Singapore Air Force, made history last year by becoming the first woman to attain the rank of brigadier-general in the Singapore Armed Forces.
When she found out that she would be free on Nov 26, she signed up for the Big Walk with Emma.
Ella said: "During last year's (SG50 Jubilee) Big Walk, Emma was complaining all the way because she doesn't usually enjoy running or walking events.
"But the theme was interesting, so in the end, it turned out to be quite fun."
She added with a grin: "I'm glad the theme for this year's Big Walk is interesting. Otherwise, my sisters would be just sulking all the way."
Eleanor is looking forward to seeing the elephants and meeting Neha, the Night Safari's five-month-old baby elephant.
The Lee family have also visited zoos in Japan and the US.
Ella said: "Whenever we go overseas, we always try to go to a zoo."
Mr Lee said: "We also bought River Safari tickets... The discount for it is great."
Participants in The New Paper Courts Big Walk can buy tickets to the River Safari at $8, up to a maximum of four tickets per participant.
