Danai Gurira makes the truly bizarre a thing of beauty
Celebrity style took a turn for the weird but wonderful, giving us pure spectacle
DANAI GURIRA (A-)
Premiere of The Walking Dead in Los Angeles
Dress: Iris Van Herpen
Shoes: Christian Louboutin
This sculptural avant-garde silhouette won't be to everyone's liking, but at least it defies convention. Is it meant to evoke a storm cloud, a shower loofah or the most fabulous sea anemone ever? Whatever you want to call it, it is high fashion and not for the faint of heart.
LADY GAGA (B+)
Premiere of A Star Is Born in London
Gown: Alexander McQueen
No guts, no glory. Such grandiose Elizabethan drag belongs to a fashion museum or the Met Gala. Gaga is seizing every chance to create over-the-top red carpet drama for her movie debut, and here she is quite literally dressed like a queen. I almost feel I need to curtsy.
CHRISTIAN SERRATOS (B)
Premiere of The Walking Dead in Los Angeles
Gown: Galia Lahav
Undoubtedly Serratos' personal best. It may be sheer and her shapewear is in our face, but I really adore the swirls of navy blue tulle. The gorgeous styling also adds a rare layer of sophistication.
KATY PERRY (C+)
Global Ocean Gala in Monaco
Gown: Tom Ford
Shoes: Via Spiga
Perry is mummified in the most glam way possible. Kudos to the unusual shape, well-executed ruching and disco ball sleeves, but it would have worked more in a colour other than "skin".
EMILY RATAJKOWSKI (C-)
Green Carpet Fashion Awards in Milan
Top and skirt: Roberto Cavalli
Shoes: Jacquemus
The past week's strong showing means nothing approached disaster levels. The silky mustard blouse and matching cycling shorts are not a tragedy, but the overall effort is still sloppy. Then again, when was the last time she didn't just coast on her sex appeal and killer abs?
