Bites to bowl you over at Uma Uma
It's always exciting to find new, inexpensive places to eat at, especially in the central part of Singapore.
At the Marina Bay area, Uma Uma Restaurant & Bar is one that fulfils this need.
The focus at this latest venture by Iki Concepts (Uma Uma Ramen, Kaiseki Yoshiyuki and Horse's Mouth) is yakitori and kushikatsu (deep fried meat skewers), with cocktails from Horse's Mouth and ramen from Uma Uma Ramen.
Prices start from $2 and there are many ramen promotions for lunch.
At this price point, don't expect superb quality. Be realistic. It's very good for the (low) price you pay but it won't be in line for a Michelin star.
Take the food and the bustling ambience at face value, and you will have a good time.
The chicken skin ($2) from the yakitori menu is my favourite plate here. I like the sweetness mixed with the crispy texture of the skin. It's sinful, of course, but it's worth it.
Another good dish is the chicken ball (tsukune, $2). Soft bone and onions are added to the mix, which gives it texture and an alluring bitter aftertaste.
From the Barbites section, the stingray fins (or eihire, $10) is a winner. It is sweet and chewy, and great with a cocktail.
I've tasted similar versions of the brussels sprouts (mecabbage, $10), so this version doesn't fascinate. It's competent but you can find it elsewhere, just not at this price.
The ramen are all of good value and quite popular during lunch, but I found them middling. The best of the lot is the Tan Tan Men ($14). I like the nutty taste and it was actually better when I returned unannounced.
