Grandma makes art to keep herself alert
It all started when she wanted to empower her grandmother, who fell down while playing badminton a year ago.
This led Miss Chia Hui Min, 23, to form Mamamakes, an art and craft brand.
Her grandmother's works - glittery Christmas cards and gift tags - will be sold at art markets including Christmas Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay until Jan 1.
Miss Chia, an architect, told The New Paper her grandmother, Madam Soh Poh Choo, 85, used to be cheery person, but after her fall, she became less chirpy and got angry easily.
"My grandma had to go for rehabilitation after her fall and at the centre, there were art and craft activities which she took part in," said Miss Chia.
"So since she used to love doing origami, why not come up with craft activities for her?"
She said Madam Soh did not want to try card-making at first but became interested after seeing her family do it. Now the retiree busies herself at home with activities ranging from doing jigsaw puzzles to making cards.
Miss Chia said: "She said it is fun. We earned some money at (a previous) art market, and she was happy. She told us she could go and buy some dye to dye her hair dark brown."
Madam Soh told TNP that she loves making cards, baking and watching TV.
She said: "They help me be more alert and allow my brain to function better."
